Skipton Business Finance has provided a £3 million funding package to Yorkshire confectionery manufacturer The Serious Sweet Company, giving the business additional working capital to support its plans for organic growth and investment.
The new partnership brings together two Yorkshire businesses, with The Serious Sweet Company looking to build on its recent growth by investing across its manufacturing operations in Harrogate and Bridlington and bringing new products to customers in the UK and overseas.
The Serious Sweet Company specialises in traditional British confectionery, producing much-loved treats including fudge, toffee, marshmallows, honeycomb, nougat and nut brittles. Its products are sold through major UK supermarkets and wholesalers, alongside a thriving export business serving markets including the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Northern Europe and the Middle East.
With a mission to keep traditional British confectionery relevant to today’s consumers, the business combines the nostalgia of familiar favourites with new recipes, products and formats. The group also owns Mallow & Marsh, the UK’s No.1 premium marshmallow brand, while its continued growth was recognised in 2026 when The Serious Sweet Company won the Top Growth Award at the York and North Yorkshire Top 100 Business Awards.
Following a period of acquisition-led expansion, the business is now focused on organic growth, with plans to invest in new equipment, develop new products and improve manufacturing efficiencies across its Yorkshire operations. SBF worked closely with the team to put the funding in place quickly, providing the flexibility to support these ambitions. Clarion Solicitors advised on the transaction, with Banking Partner, Ben Slack and Paralegal Andrea Piponides supporting the deal through to completion.
Emma Verity, Finance Director at The Serious Sweet Company, said:
“We were very impressed with the professionalism, speed and implementation of the Skipton Business Finance team.
“The funding gives us greater flexibility as we focus on organic growth, invest in our manufacturing capabilities and continue developing new treats for customers in the UK and internationally.
“SBF offers more than funding. Their contacts and industry knowledge will support us as we think through our strategy and development, and we believe we’ve found a long-term partner that will support our growth.”
Matt Fannon, Senior Regional Sales Director (ABL) at Skipton Business Finance, said:
“The Serious Sweet Company is a fantastic Yorkshire business with strong brands, international reach and exciting ambitions for the future.
“We worked closely with the team to understand what they needed and moved quickly to put the right funding in place. That responsiveness, alongside providing flexible funding tailored to each business, is a really important part of how we work at SBF.
“We’re proud to support another Yorkshire business as it enters its next phase of growth and look forward to building a long-term partnership with the team.”
