Small businesses offered free Facebook adverts

£4.2 million worth of Facebook adverts are to be offered to start-ups and small businesses across Europe, it was announced yesterday by the social networking giant.

50,000 small businesses across the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy will be able to claim credits worth approximately £80 each to use on the site.

Facebook is closing in on one billion users, a figure it’s expecting to surpass in August this year, and, with its primary revenue stream being businesses’ spend on adverts, is increasingly looking at ways to encourage small businesses to take advantage of social media and the sheer scale of people that can be reached through the site.

It was also announced that Facebook had teamed up with the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) to run events across the UK aimed at educating small businesses on how they can use Facebook to their advantage and interact with customers successfully.
