85% of new jobs created by SMEs

Across the European Union, more than eight in 10 new jobs were created by small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) between 2002 and 2010, new figures have revealed.

Micro firms, businesses with less than 10 employees, created 58% of new jobs, with enterprises creating a further 27% of an average of 1.1 million new jobs every year in the 8-year period, according to a report by the European Commission.

Commission vice-president responsible for entrepreneurship and industry, Antonio Tajani suggested that the figures showed that SMEs were “clearly the key for restoring economic growth”.

As enterprises across Europe continue to be the major generator of new jobs, it is critical they are supported by European governments to ensure as many jobs are created as possible amidst lingering economic uncertainty.
